Independent Living Skills

Building the confidence and tools to live life your way.

Building Skills for Everyday Life

Living independently means having the skills and confidence to manage your own life. We work with you to figure out what you want to learn and how to reach your goals.

Our team can help you learn how to cook healthy meals, manage your money, use public transportation, or get ready for a job. We teach these skills one-on-one or in small groups.

You are in charge of your learning. We provide the tools, support, and practice you need to succeed. All of our independent living services are completely free for individuals in Ottawa and Allegan counties.

Building the Confidence and Tools to Live Life Your Way

Independent living is not about doing everything alone — it is about having the skills, support, and confidence to make your own choices and lead your own life.

At Disability Network Lakeshore, we provide personalized Independent Living Skills training for people with disabilities of all ages. Whether you are moving out on your own for the first time, learning to manage daily routines, or rebuilding life after a major change, we are here to help you gain the tools you need to live with greater independence and self-direction.

What We Can Help With

Our skill-building support is tailored to each person's goals. Common focus areas include:

  • Budgeting and managing money
  • Finding and maintaining housing
  • Navigating transportation and community resources
  • Self-advocacy and communication
  • Scheduling, time management, and organization
  • Accessing health care and managing appointments
  • Cooking, cleaning, and personal care routines

These everyday skills add up to something bigger: the freedom to live where you want, spend your time the way you choose, and rely on yourself first.

How It Works

We begin with a conversation — learning about your goals, your strengths, and the areas where you would like support. From there, we create a customized plan and work at your pace, one step at a time. Sessions can happen one-on-one or in small groups, in person or virtually, depending on your preferences and needs.

There is no set curriculum that everyone must follow, and there is no test at the end. Your plan is built around your life. Some people work with us for a few weeks on a single goal, like learning a bus route. Others work with us over many months as they prepare to move into their own apartment. Both are wins.

Who Is This For?

Independent Living Skills training is for people with any type of disability, at any age, anywhere in Ottawa and Allegan counties. Young adults preparing to leave home, adults adjusting to a new disability, and older adults who want to stay in their own homes all use this service. Like all of our individual services, it is provided free of charge.

Our Philosophy

As a Center for Independent Living, we believe people with disabilities are the best experts on their own lives. Our staff — many of whom have disabilities themselves — walk alongside you, offering tools, not taking over. Every skill you build belongs to you.
