Disability Network Lakeshore (DNL) is a nonprofit Center for Independent Living run by and for people with disabilities. Accessibility is not an add-on for us — it is our mission. We want every person to be able to use this website with ease, no matter how they see, hear, move, or think.

Our Commitment

We are committed to making this website meet or exceed the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. These are the widely accepted standards for making web content usable by people with disabilities, and the standards referenced by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act.

What We Do to Keep This Site Accessible

  • Every page works with a keyboard alone — no mouse needed. A "Skip to main content" link appears at the top of every page so keyboard and screen reader users can jump straight past the menu.
  • Every page works without JavaScript. Menus, forms, and content stay usable if scripts are turned off.
  • All images have meaningful text descriptions for people using screen readers, and images that are purely decorative are hidden from assistive technology so they do not add clutter.
  • We use clear headings in a logical order, descriptive links, and labels on every form field, so the page is easy to navigate with a screen reader.
  • We use high color contrast between text and background, and text can be resized up to 200% without losing content or breaking the layout.
  • We write in plain language so information is easy to understand.
  • Videos and audio content include captions or transcripts.
  • We test our pages with automated accessibility checkers and fix errors before publishing changes.
