DNL Live — Episode 1 of 5
Crafts with Karon
Watch the episode
Crafting is one of the easiest ways to relax, express yourself and make something you are proud of. In this episode of DNL Live, Karon from Disability Network Lakeshore walks you through a simple craft project step by step. You do not need special skills, expensive supplies or an art background. Most of the materials can be found around your home or picked up for a few dollars at a local store.
Karon takes her time with each step, so you can follow along at your own pace. If you need to pause the video, pause it. If you want to watch a step twice, watch it twice. That is the beauty of a video series like DNL Live — it moves at the speed you choose.
Why crafting matters for independent living
At Disability Network Lakeshore, we talk a lot about independent living skills. Cooking, budgeting and using transportation come to mind first. But hobbies matter too. Activities like crafting help with fine motor skills, focus and planning. They also support mental health. Making something with your hands can lower stress, lift your mood and give you a sense of accomplishment.
Crafting is also a social activity. Many people with disabilities tell us that hobbies helped them meet new friends and feel more connected to their community. You can craft with a friend, a family member, a peer support group or a neighbor. You can share what you make, give it as a gift or decorate your home with it.
Make the project your own
There is no wrong way to do this project. If a step is hard for your hands, change it. Use bigger tools, ask a friend to help with one part or swap in materials that work better for you. Adapting an activity so it works for your body is a skill in itself — and it is a skill we love to teach.
Tips before you start
Set yourself up for success before you press play. Gather your supplies first and lay them out on a clear table with good lighting. Keep a damp cloth nearby for sticky fingers and spills. If sitting for a long time is hard for you, plan the project in short sessions — a craft does not have to be finished in one day. And remember that the goal is enjoyment, not perfection. A wobbly line or an uneven edge is proof that a real person made it, and that is what makes handmade things special.
Craft along at your own pace
The best way to enjoy this episode is to press play and follow Karon step by step. Watch once all the way through to see where you are headed, then start it again and build alongside her. There is no timer and no pressure — the video waits for you, so you can pause, rewind and take as many breaks as you need.
