Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act
Disability Network/Lakeshore is hosting several events throughout the year in
to mark and celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA)
and the positive opportunities the ADA has provided for everyone in our community.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Livable Communities Event
Keynote Speaker: Christopher Zimmerman
including Majora Carter and Dan Burden

Registration beginning at 6:00pm
$35 Registration Fee (includes dinner + presentation)
Registration Deadline: November 1, 2010.
The event will include dinner, time for networking,
two presentations, and a time for Q & A.
Christopher Zimmerman of Arlington, VA, will be the evening’s keynote speaker presenting the connections between economic development and livable communities, including mixed-use and livable design. Mr. Zimmerman, a County Commissioner, specializes in affordable housing, transit-oriented development, and other related urban design. Mr. Zimmerman has served on many transit boards and authorities and has received numerous awards, including the Livable Communities Leadership Award (2004), Outstanding Contribution by a Public Official (2003), and Champion of Sensible Transportation (2001).

Dan Burden, founder and Executive Director of Walkable and Livable Communities, Inc., will also be in attendance to network and meet with event attendees. Mr. Burden has worked in over 2,700 villages, cities and towns across the country, including the Lakeshore area. Mr. Zimmerman will offer a second workshop on the topic of transportation as related to affordable housing.
Lastly, Majora Carter will provide a live video feed during the event. From 2001 to 2008, Majora was Executive Director of the non-profit she founded: Sustainable South Bronx – where she pioneered green-collar job training and placement systems in one of the most environmentally and economically challenged parts of the US. This MacArthur “genius” is now president of her own economic consulting firm, a co-host on Sundance Channel’s The Green, and host of a new special public radio series called, The Promised Land.

Dancing Wheels Company – Spring 2011
In Spring 2011, Disability Network will partner with Hope College’s Department of Dance and Events & Conferences to stage the Dancing Wheels Company, a professional dance troupe of artists with and without disabilities that educates, entertains, and advocates through inclusive dance. Dancing Wheels has been in existence for 30 years and is recognized worldwide as America’s first and foremost physically integrated dance company. Disability Network/Lakeshore is hosting this event in partnerships with Hope College and the Holland Area Arts Council.
